Students interested in being considered for the ITP Fellowship will need to apply as a Ph.D. student in one of the below departments. See links below for department information and application deadlines.

Entry-level students who have applied to UW-Madison and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents can be nominated for ITP support by their participating department. Application materials submitted to the department should include an interest in education research and quantitative analysis. See here for more details on ITP Eligibility and Benefits. Students may indicate their interest in being considered for ITP support in their application materials, or by separately notifying their departmental admissions staff. Students will not be considered by the ITP without endorsement of the admitting department.

Nominating departments will submit a copy of the student’s application materials for consideration along with a letter of support from the department for each nomination. The letter of support may be brief, simply indicating that the advisor/faculty mentor supports the student’s application to the ITP fellowship. The letter may provide additional information not included in the original application but need not do so. All application materials must be submitted by the department.

First-year graduate students enrolled in one of the participating departments (economics, political science, psychology, sociology, social welfare, educational leadership & policy analysis, educational policy studies, educational psychology) may indicate their interest by separately notifying their department.  We will evaluate candidates based on their statement and initial graduate school application materials.

We require a brief letter of support from a current advisor indicating that the advisor (1) supports the student’s application and (2) verifies that the student is making good progress in the program.  The letter may provide additional information not included in the original application but need not do so.

Applications should include:

1. 1-page statement of interest, including discussion of interest in research on education using methods that permit causal inference.
2. Advisor’s letter of support.
3. List of courses taken during the past academic year and grades from the current fall semester.
4. A copy of the student’s original application file.
